Have you just bought your own personal watercraft? Are you thinking about getting one? Either way, it’s important to educate yourself on all the best practices for using a PWC. One of the trickiest things to master is launching your watercraft from the dock without error or a lot of wasted time and running around. It’s not ideal to take up too much time at the boat launch, since it’s very likely that many people want to launch their own watercrafts and boats, so you have to be able to do this quickly.

Roseville Motorsports in Rocklin is your Sacramento-area personal watercraft dealer. Here are the steps you need to take to successfully launch your PWC.

1. Get Your Trailer Ready

You should have purchased a trailer with your personal watercraft so that you have a means of towing it to the water. Always inspect your trailer and your towing vehicle before you depart to make sure nothing is amiss. Securely fasten your PWC to the trailer and cover it, using tie-downs and ropes to lash it into place. One good tip is to use zip-ties to anchor your trailer’s license plate in such a way that it flips out of the way when it scrapes against the boat launch, since you have to back the trailer into the water a little bit.

2. Be Prepared

Pull over to the side of the road or launch area out of everyone’s way so that you can perform all the tasks you need to do to be ready to launch your PWC. This includes putting on your lifejacket, applying sunscreen, filling your waterproof compartments with your supplies, inserting the drain plug and testing the engine to make sure your PWC works. This is also a good time to tie a rope around the PWC to make it easy to tow to an open area once it’s in the water. Unfasten all the secures on your PWC so that it can float gently on the water’s surface.

3. Release Your PWC

Drive your towing setup carefully to the launch and wait for your turn. Back your trailer slowly into the water so that it’s slightly submerged, which should let your PWC float. Park the truck, get out and use the rope on your PWC to lash it to a dock post out of the way. Then you can get back in your car and park it.

4. Leave the Dock With Care

Now that your personal watercraft is in at least three feet of water, you can sit down and turn the throttle. Always avoid starting up your PWC in shallow water, as this can cause the intake to become clogged with pebbles, algae, sand and other debris. Pull away from the dock slowly and carefully to avoid hitting anyone or anything and only speed up when you’ve reached open water that’s relatively free of obstacles. Twist that throttle again and have a great time!
